The PHI PHI ISLANDS are by far the main attraction to Krabi, and are widely considered to be amongst the most beautiful beaches in the world. Phi Phi was renowned for the clearness of its water and the beauty of its corals. Unfortunately, it suffered somewhat from over development. The December 2004 tsunami wreaked havoc on the many poorly constructed cheap bungalows and small hotels that crowded the islands. Development since the tsunami has seen more-upscale resorts being built. There are six islands altogether: Phi Phi Don, Phi Phi Le, Mai Phai (Bamboo island), Bida Nok, Bida Nai, Yung, each of which offers some of the most unique topography on this planet. Of these six islands Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Le are the largest, and most well known. It offers sheer limestone cliffs, fine sand beaches and hidden coves. Around the coast and just offshore, coral gardens and deeper reefs are perfect for diving and snorkeling. Phi phi means mangroves. |
